Save the North East Bath House at SVL

North Bath house

This article appeared in the Letter To The Editor section of the Linn County News in October 2008. The Audio Excerpt was recorded by the Webmaster at the 2008 Annual Member Meeting. In the clip, you will hear the actual statements from the manager as to why the bath house is being closed.

The leadership from the homes association at SUGAR VALLEY LAKES intend to demolish this NORTH bathhouse on the east side of the subdivision. Members are getting different stories as to why this much needed amenity is being demolished.

Two years ago, after the membership voted down the Board’s request for an assessment increase, the north bathhouse was closed. The members were told that the building was unsafe and would not be opened for 2007. Locks were placed on the doors. Then, deck screws were used to seal the doors. The members now only had the SOUTH bathhouse to use, however one of the stalls in that bath house was marked “out of order” throughout 2007. At the annual member meeting in January 2008, I asked why the north bathhouse had not been opened all last year. The general manager responded that many of the people that live on that side of the creek had not paid their dues and the Association was not going to let these people have free showers and restrooms.

The north bathhouse remained sealed throughout 2008. This past weekend, I noticed the doors of the bathhouse were off the hinges, so I went inside. Most of the pluming, including a shower has been removed. Some nearby residents informed me they had been told that the Association was soon going to demolish the bathhouse because the holding tank is leaking. So, now we have three stories. The building is unsafe, the holding tank is damaged and that the Association just doesn’t want non-paying members to use it. Well, from what I saw, until the destruction began, there was nothing wrong with the building. And, if the holding tank is leaking, why can’t they use their new backhoe to repair it? That’s why we pay assessments in the first place. Every time our amenities are neglected, our property values go down. This action has to be stopped!
